Alarm Phone, the Activist Hotline: Standing Alongside People on the Move

12 years. On 11 October 2026, we will have been operational for 4,380 days and nights, 24/7 on standby and constantly in action. We launched our project in October 2014. We have succeeded in establishing a continuous structure of solidarity along the routes of migration.

Survival. We support the people on the boats and empower them against their fear. We exert public pressure and compel reluctant coastguards to carry out rescues. Or we facilitate their arrival in collaboration with the civilian sea rescue fleet. Time and again, rescues are achieved at the last minute or only through hours of communication with those affected.

Death. But we also witness how the voices at the other end of the line become desperate and panicked. How they sometimes fall silent and contact is lost. Or relatives get in touch with us to enquire about loved ones who have gone missing at sea. For 12 years, we have been witnesses to people being left to die at sea.

Every day, we document human rights violations in the form of violent pushbacks or failures to provide assistance. Together with those affected – the ‘People on the Move’ – we challenge racist and neocolonial migration policies.

We connect Europe and Africa through trans-Mediterranean networks. Together with the relatives of the victims of the border regime, we commemorate the deadly injustice and demand accountability from those responsible. Opposing all forms of nationalism, we campaign for an open space for exchange and for a world without borders.

300 activists. We live in Dakar, Rabat or Tunis, in Marseille, Zurich or Berlin. We have built a transnational and multilingual collective that has pledged to stand alongside those fighting for their right to freedom of movement and for a better life.
